WHITE SUPREMACIST TRIED TO AVENGE 2013 MURDER OF BRITISH ARMY MAN LEE RIGBY
LONDON: A Sikh doctor was brutally attacked with a machete and hammer by a white supremacist as a revenge for the May 2013 murder of British army man Lee Rigby, almost severing his hand and inflicting other injuries.
Details of the attack were revealed during a hearing in the Mold Crown Court, north Wales, on Monday, as a jury was told how Zack Davies, 26, followed Sarandev Bhambra into a superstore and attacked him on January 14.
As per the standard practice, the victim’s name was not revealed until the court hearing.
Leeds-based Bhambra was working in Mold as a trainee dentist when he was attacked. Davies was said to be laughing and shouting “white supremacy”, “this is revenge” and “this is for Lee Rigby” during the attack.
The victim’s hand was almost severed from his arm. Bhambra desperately tried to get away from the defendant and threw items from the shelves to try and trip him as he chased him with the weapons, the court was told in the continuing trial of Davies.
Prosecuting barrister Sion ap Mihangel said Davies followed Bhambra into the superstore because of his Asian appearance.
He said Davies accepted being responsible for the injuries and had followed and attacked Bhambra because of his “ethnic appearance”, but it was his case that he did not intend to kill him.
The prosecution said Davies would have killed Bhambra but for the brave intervention of a customer, former soldier Peter Fuller of Mold, who stood in his way and was then said to have persuaded him to put the weapons down.
The jury was told how the defendant’s home was later searched and items of white supremacy and Nazism were found.
When arrested, Davies said: “It was me. I surrendered my weapons. I did it for Lee Rigby,” the court heard. He is said to have told witnesses that he had “lost it” and that he carried out the planned attack “for the whites”.
Bhambra suffered two wounds to the head, a wound to the lower back, an injury to the ankle and a “huge gaping wound” to the base of his left hand.
