LONDON: A charity organisation based on the Sikh philosophy that raised the alleged human rights violations in India and elsewhere has been granted special consultative status with the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) of the United Nations.
Established in 1985, the Sikh Human Rights’ Group (SHRG) raised issues in Punjab as well as other issues of interest to the world community.
The group believes that it may have influenced policy changes in countries such as India, the United Kingdom, the US and Canada.
Director of the group Jasdev Rai said: “Achieving the special consultative status for the group has been one of the biggest hurdles to our work. It’s a reflection of the group’s diplomatic skills that we were able to convince countries such as India, Pakistan, China, Russia, the USA and others of the merits of our work to UN body.”
The group said in a statement on Tuesday that since 2000, the SHRG has also been focussing on issues of environment and sustainable development.
