BATHINDA: Police have arrested a British citizen of Punjabi origin for entering India without visa. The accused, Gurpreet Singh Dhaliwal, 40, was arrested from Kothaguru village on Sunday.

Investigation officer (IO) Birbal Singh at Dialpura police station said the accused had gone to England about 18 years back and got a British citizenship. “He entered India via Kathmandu and doesn’t have Indian visa. He has been arrested under the Passport Act. His British passport has been confiscated,” said the officer.

Dialpura SHO Birbal Singh said Dhaliwal had travelled to Kathmandu on a valid visa and then entered India without a visa. Sources said Dhaliwal had a dispute with the family before he immigrated to England, leaving his wife, son and daughter behind.

Bathinda SSP Swapan Sharma said Dhaliwal was arrested after the police got a tip that a man had entered India via Nepal without the necessary documents. He, however, said that nothing suspicious had come out during his interrogation.
