Jalandhar : The state government seems to be in no mood to hold the NRI Sangat Darshan programme this year.
Earlier, it had held the ‘extravagant’ NRI Sammelan for almost 12 years with the last one being in 2014.
While Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Badal, during the flagging off of a train under the Mukhya Mantri Tirath Yatra Scheme at Jalandhar on Wednesday, said that the government would hold the event soon, Sanjay Kumar, Principal Secretary, NRI Department, said that the government was unable to hold it this season as there was a model code of conduct in place due to the Khadoor Sahib bypoll slated to be held on February 13.
CM Parkash Singh Badal had announced last year that he would hold the NRI Sangat Darshan event annually during the NRI season from October to January. But now, with the majority of the Punjabi diaspora already onboard for their return journey as January-end approaches, the event seems to be a distant reality this year.
