Canadian ministers, MPs to take part in I-Day celebrations in Toronto

Toronto: Top Canadian leaders, including ministers, MPs, MPPs and Mayors, will join the Indo-Canadian community in celebrating India’s 70th Independence Day at Yonge and Dundas Square in downtown Toronto on Sunday, August 7, hosted by Panorama India with the support of Consulate General of India, Toronto.
The biggest event of the community draws thousands of people to the colourful parade and subsequent cultural performances showcasing India’s diversity in dance, music and culture. Vibrantly decorated floats representing India have been introduced this year for the India Day Parade. Bollywood actress Neetu Chandra will be the Grand Parade Marshal. Indian television actor and host Shabir Ahluwalia will interact with the audience on stage on India Day. Popular Saregama Pa contestants and finalist Kinjal Chatterjee and Jagpreet Bajwa will be the headline performers.
The day-long celebrations will begin with the singing of the National Anthem and patriotic songs. It will be followed by the downtown grand parade comprising dignitaries, contingents of different Indian states and various Indo-Canadian cultural groups. There are 18 state represented and community groups who have registered for the parade. Panorama India decorated float with the resplendent Ashok Chakra will lead followed by state represented floats of Gujarat, Kashmir, Punjab, Maharashtra and Kerala. Parade will be led by 12-member Canadian Military Band.
After the parade winds up back at Yonge and Dundas Square, the high-voltage cultural show will unfold. Twentyfive cultural troupes and individual performances with 250 participants will showcase India’s rich and diverse cultural heritage non-stop followed by free concert by popular artists from India.
This year too, more than 24 vendors will treat visitors to an array of Indian delicacies - idli, dosa, chat papri, biryani, tandoori and other ethnic dishes. Ethnic Indian products will also be on sale at the venue.
