Chandigarh : With dreams of a better future in his eyes, Paramjit Singh of Mahabalipur near Sultanpur Lodhi in Kapurthala, was desperate to immigrate to the US. He did manage to reach there, but illegally through a travel agent who fleeced him. Not able to find the promised employment and deportation staring at his face, Paramjit allegedly committed suicide in December last year.

Jagraon : Yet another Punjabi youth was allegedly shot dead in Manila, capital of the Philippines. The victim has been identified as Harminder Singh Sidhu of Kaunke Kalan village near Jagraon. Harminder was the only son of his parents and the sole breadwinner of the family.

Chandigarh : Former Punjab Congress MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira has flayed the Modi government for increasing import duty on sugar from 15 to 25 per cent. He termed it a "mischievous step to repay sugar mills and big corporate houses" for having "funded" the BJP election campaign for the Lok Sabha.

London : Oscar-winning British filmmaker Richard Attenborough, who struggled for 20 years to bring the life of Mahatma Gandhi on-screen in 1982 film ‘Gandhi’, has died. He was 90.
