LONDON: First mooted and abandoned over a decade ago, the plan to raise a Sikh regiment in the British army was revived before the 2015 election and has again been dropped, official sources told Hindustan Times.

London: NRIs Virendra Sharma, Labour MP from Ealing and Southall, and Surinder Arora, founder chairman of the Arora Hotels, have won ‘Pride of Punjab Award’ 2017 for their outstanding contribution to the communities in the UK. Britain’s Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, Sajid Javid MP, presented the awards to them at the annual dinner of the Punjabi society of the British Isles on Thursday night.

New York: The iconic Times Square was seeped in the colours and tradition of the Sikh culture as members of the community tied turbans to thousands of New Yorkers and tourists to spread awareness about the Sikh identity amid a spike in hate crimes against them in the country. Non-profit group ‘The Sikhs of New York’ organised the ‘Turban Day’ at Times Square here on Saturday, with its volunteers tying colourful turbans to close to 8000 Americans and tourists hailing from different nationalities and ethnicities.

London: The rapist and murderer of a 30-year-old Indian-origin woman in the UK was sentenced to life in prison on Wednesday. Pardeep Kaur, a hotel housekeeper, was attacked by Vadims Ruskuls as she walked to work in south-west London. Her dead body was found a week later near Heathrow Airport.
