LONDON: A giant Ferris wheel named the ‘Wheel of Light’ was the highlight of the annual Diwali lights switching-on ceremony on Monday evening in the east Midlands town of Leicester, which is called ‘Little India’ due to a large minority of Indian origin.

TORONTO: Punjabi has now become the third most common language, after English and French, in the House of Commons in Canada after 20 Punjabi-speaking candidates were elected to the parliament in October.

LONDON: A memorial to honour 1,30,000 Sikh soldiers who fought during World War I was unveiled at the National Memorial Arboretum (NMA) in Staffordshire, west Midlands, on Sunday. A spokeswoman for the NMA said: “Despite being only 1% of the Indian population at the time, they constituted 20% of the British Indian Army and were represented in over a third of the regiments at the time.”

London : An Indian-origin father, Darshan Singh Chhokar (76), has died in the UK awaiting justice for his son for over 17 years. His son Surjit Singh Chhokar (32) was stabbed to death in one of Scotland's most high profile murder cases, a media report said.
