Akali councillor’s brother booked after woman sets self ablaze

LUDHIANA: Four days after a 34-year-old woman set herself ablaze outside the office of councillor from ward number 4 and Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Sarabjit Singh Laddi, Basti Jodhewal police have booked his brother Amarjit Singh Kali on Friday.
A case has been registered following the statement recorded by the victim Sonam alias Neha to a judicial magistrate at Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh. She alleged that Amarjit Singh Kali drove her to take the extreme step.
Police have registered a case under sections 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
In her statement the victim said that Amarjit Singh Kali helped in divorcing her husband. She alleged that her husband had given alimony of ₹2 lakh, but Amarjit Singh took it.
She also alleged that Amarjit Singh stayed with her in a live-in relationship in a rented accommodation.
She said that from past one month Amarjit Singh had started avoiding her and stopped picking up her phone calls. When she went to complain about it, Amarjit Singh assaulted her and also made video of the incident, she said.
The victim also said that she narrated the situation to Sarabjit Singh Laddi and others, but no one helped her. Inspector Harpal Singh, station house officer (SHO) at Basti Jodhewal police station said the police launched manhunt for the arrest of the accused, who is on run. He added that the police may add more sections in the FIR after investigating the matter.
