SANGRUR: Five of a family, along with one other, died in a road accident that took place at the Dirba town of Sangrur. About 20 people got injured in the bus accident.

The accident happened when a bus overturned on the Sangrur-New Delhi international highway. Out of the 20 people who got seriously injured, two passengers are stated to be critical. The family of five that died was in a car that collided with the bus.

The private bus that met with an accident was heading towards Patran and was a private bus. The bus driver, who fled, has been booked by the police. According to the eye witnesses of the accident, the bus that was over speeding overturned after colliding with the car.

Those who have died have been identified as Girjeet Singh, 50, his wife Hardeep kaur, 47, Jagtar Singh, 48, his wife Balwinder Kaur and Jaspal Kaur. The five died on the spot after meeting with the accident, the police informed. There was a loud bang when the accident happened and the villagers who heard this reached the spot immediately and pulled out the dead as well as the injured and informed the police.

The sixth victim, who was travelling in the bus, has been identified as Mohinder Kaur, 65. The two passengers, who are critical, are Gurjant Singh and Gurdial Kaur, both from Patran, and are admitted at the Civil Hospital in Sangrur. Sources stated that the family that got killed were going to Dhuri to attend a bhog ceremony from Sangrur. The car that met with the accident is damaged and locals had to resort to cranes to take the bodies out in a rescue attempt that lasted for about two hours.

According to Krishan Kumar, SHO from Dirba, “A case has been registered against the bus driver for rash driving that led to six people dying in the accident.”
