Patiala : The Punjab Police today claimed that Delhi-based international drug racket kingpin Dev Behl, who was recently arrested, was an associate of Dawood Ibrahim and his brother Anees in gold smuggling from 1983 to 1988.
But due to differences with Anees and declining profits in gold smuggling, Behl quit the venture and started dealing in second-hand cars to legalise his ill-gotten wealth. Hardyal Singh Mann, Senior Superintendent of Police, Patiala, said Dev, who is in his 50s, took to criminal activities in the early 1980s. He ventured into gold smuggling along with Dawood and Anees.
“Dev had met Anees and Dawood many times during this period. He was in touch with Dawood even after their partnership broke up in 1988. He even went to Dubai to meet Dawood. They used to smuggle eight to 10 kg of gold every month,” Mann said.
He said Dev started operating a drug racket in 2000. He had obtained chemicals like ephedrine, pseudoephedrine and ketamine in a huge quantity to manufacture synthetic drugs in factories located in Himachal Pradesh and other states on a large scale.
He was recently working on one of his biggest consignments of 300 kg of ICE worth Rs 1,500 crore, he said. “Dev preferred handling large consignments. In 2004, he had obtained 700 kg of pseudoephedrine from Hyderabad, manufactured ICE from it and pumped it into the international market,” the police official added.
