Patiala : With the Shiromani Akali Dal and Bharatiya Janata Party criticising the Congress over property tax, it’s time for Congress to return the fire and Brahm Mohindra, MLA and vice-president of the Punjab Congress, has fired the first salvo on SAD-BJP government over the issue.

With the NDA taking over the reins at the Centre, the Punjab Congress vice-president has asked the SAD-BJP alliance to abolish property tax with immediate effect.

As the Punjab government extended date of filing property tax to June 30, Mohindra termed as it double standard of SAD leadership.

“Rather than extending date of filing property, SAD-BJP should abolish it with immediate effect”, said Mohindra.

“You had misled the public by saying that the UPA government forced Punjab to impose property tax and also promised to abolish it if NDA formed government at the Centre. Now, it’s SAD-BJP alliance which is in power in the state and at the Centre. Thus, the SAD-BJP should either scrap property tax with immediate effect or tender apology to public for misleading them in the Lok Sabha campaign,” said Brahm Mohindra to SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal.

A five-time MLA from Patiala, Mohindra asked the SAD-BJP to scrap property tax by issuing notification and said the Congress would support the ruling alliance to pass the bill to abolish property tax in the coming budget session.

“If the SAD-BJP will fail on it, the Congress will expose the double standards of the ruling alliance in the public”, he added. Apart from that Mohindra has taken a dig over the SAD-BJP leadership on the issue of partnership in the NDA.

Mohindra has asked Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal that instead of ministerial berths in the NDA Cabinet, the CM must bargain for economic package for the state, as promised during the Lok Sabha campaign of the SAD-BJP coalition.

“I do hope that you will show some statesmanship and instead of making request for ministerial berth, you will ask for an economic package for Punjab to bail out the state from debt”, added Mohindra.
