FATEHGARH SAHIB: The hunger strike by district Congress workers against sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) Pooja Syal Grewal completed 41 days here on Monday.
The verbal spat between Congress MLA Kuljit Singh Nagra and Grewal had led to the demand for her transfer by Congress workers, who later started a hunger strike over the issue.
A verbal spat took place between Nagra and Grewal at a meeting to discuss an antiencroachment drive, after which the SDM lodged a complaint for using abusive language. However, Nagra denied the allegations and accused Grewal of not following protocol. The anganwadi workers protested in front of the deputy commissioner’s office against the SDM. The workers were assigned the work of verifying the blue card beneficiaries and pensioners. They refused, saying, “This is not our work. Either give us rewards or we won’t do anything.” The president of the anganwadi workers’ union, Harjit Kaur Panjola, said,
“This affects young children of the angawadi and workers may fall prey to the party system of villages.” Fatehgarh Sahib deputy commissioner has promised to resolve the issue soon and the anganwadi workers have postponed their protest. “If we do not get a satisfactory solution, we will start a hunger strike,” added Kaur.
