Chandigarh : The Punjab government tonight recommended to State Election Commissioner SS Brar to hold elections to the state’s six municipal corporations on February 20 and the 122 municipal councils on February 25. Brar will decide the election dates by the end of the week.
Officials of the Local Bodies Department told The Tribune that so far they had issued the final notification for 108 municipal councils and five municipal corporations of Bathinda, Moga, Phagwara, Hoshiarpur and Mohali. The final notification for the remaining 15 councils and the municipal corporation of Pathankot were expected to be issued by Friday. In most cases, the notification had been delayed owing to problems in delimitation with the jurisdiction of local bodies clashing with those of zila parishads, they said.
A case regarding the delay in elections to local bodies is to come up before the Punjab and Haryana High Court tomorrow. The state government will file a reply, telling the court the dates finalised for the elections.
