Sangrur : Congress workers, led by Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) vice president Surinderpal Sibia, blocked the Sangrur-Patiala road over the shortage of urea fertiliser here today. The protesters also raised slogans against the state and the central governments.
Sibia termed Badal and Modi governments as “anti-farmer” as both the governments had failed to ensure proper supply of urea to farmers. He said dealers were forcing farmers to buy costly pesticides if they wanted to get urea bags.
On the amendments to the Land Acquisition Act, Sibia said the Badal government had not opposed the amendments that are against the interests of the farmers. The protesters demanded that the state government urge the Modi government to send the required number of urea racks to Punjab.
Among others present on the occasion were Mahila Congress district president Kanta Kuthala, Bhawanigarh block Congress president Varinder Kumar Panwan, former municipal council president Harbans Lal and Sangrur block Congress president Nathu Lal Dhingra.
