Jalandhar : The Punjab Youth Congress has decided to start ‘Kisan Satyagraha’ to protest against the Union Government for introducing the Land Acquisition Ordinance, 2014, from Wednesday.
Various farmer organisations have already held protests against the ordinance terming it “anti-farmer” and “pro-industrialist”. State YC chief Vikramjit Singh Chaudhary said the programme was being organised on a nationwide call by the Youth Congress.
He said from January 14 to 22, Youth Congress leaders will meet their respective MPs and MLAs seeking their support against the ordinance. He said a signature campaign would be launched and dharnas would also be held. On January 23, the birthday of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, the Youth Congress would hold dharnas at the district headquarters and also submit memorandums to Deputy Commissioners. He said by month-end, the state Youth Congress representatives would stage a dharna in the national capital.
He said various other issues affecting farmers would also be raised. “Farmers are facing hardships due to inadequate MSP, shortage of urea, meagre compensation package and increase in taxes on petroleum products. The retail prices of petrol and diesel have not come down proportionately even as the international crude oil prices had come down from $110 per barrel in May 2014 when the Modi government took charge to $56 per barrel,” he said.
“The Land Acquisition Act holds a special significance for the Youth Congress since Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi led the Kisan Sandesh Yatra from Bhatta Parsaul village in Uttar Pradesh in July 2011 to go to villages and understand the acquisition process and bring in a new farmer-friendly Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act, 2013, which the Modi government has now amended,” he said.
