JALANDHAR: A former Akali sarpanch’s son has been arrested in the hit-and-run case in which PCR (police control room) cop Lakhwinder Singh was injured on Tuesday night.
A sports utility vehicle (SUV) had run the head constable over when he signalled its occupants to stop in Model Town here. The injured cop is undergoing treatment at a private hospital.
The youth, arrested from Dharamkot in Moga district, has been identified as Gursamit Singh, (22), son of ex-sarpanch Jaswinder Pal Singh of Talwandi Jalle Khan village in Ferozepur district.
The police also recovered the vehicle, a white Scorpio (PB05AA-1500), on Friday, even as a local court remanded Gursamit in four-day police custody.
Gursamit, who did BA from DAV College, Sector 10, Chandigarh, told the police that he was staying at his aunt’s house in the local Golden Avenue area. He revealed that his father owned around 1,000 acres of land in their village.
Gursamit also told the cops that he, along with his cousin Simarpreet Singh (22), had come into contact with two girls three days before the incident. Simarpreet, a BTech student at the local DAV University, is the son of Gurinder Singh, sitting Akali sarpanch of Talwandi Jalle Khan village. The two girls work as nurses in a leading private hospital of the city.
On Tuesday night, the four of them arrived at a juice bar in Model Town. A brawl took place, after which Simarpreet, who was driving the SUV, ran Lakhwinder over when the latter asked them to stop, according to Gursamit.
Witnesses said the group was having juice around 10.30pm when they demanded a water bottle from a worker. When the latter said it was not available, one of the youths allegedly slapped him. The worker called his employer, Gopal Krishan, who was also allegedly assaulted. In his complaint to the police, Krishan alleged that the youths also threatened to shoot him, following which he called up the PCR. Head constables Lakhwinder and Gurpreet Singh reached the spot on a motorcycle, but the youths ran Lakhwinder over before speeding away.
Assistant commissioner of police (ACP) BIS Kahlon said raids were on arrest Simarpreet.
