6 MCs in Punjab go to the polls on Feb 22

CHANDIGARH: Six municipal corporations in Punjab will go to the polls on February 22. This was announced by the Punjab State Election Commission on Friday, but it was silent on the muchawaited elections to 123 municipal committees across the state.

The six corporations are Pathankot, Hoshiarpur, Phagwara, Moga, SAS Nagar and Bathinda. Byelections will also be held on February 22 for Ward No 49 (general) of Jalandhar municipal corporation, and Ward Nos 8 (OBC) and 46 (general) of the Patiala municipal corporation.

The last date for filing nominations is February 11. The papers will be scrutinised on February 12 and the last date for the withdrawal of candidature is February 13. The counting will take place on February 26.

“The notification will be issued on Saturday (February 7) when the model code of conduct comes into effect,” state election commissioner SS Brar said in a statement here. Brar said the model code would be enforced only in areas where the polls would take place.

The code won’t be applicable to 123 municipal committees, including the Dhuri MC. The Dhuri seat is lying vacant after MLA Arvind Khanna’s resignation.
