In SAD-BJP brawl, BJP candidate injured, Akali candidate booked

Amritsar : A major brawl took place between the workers of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Lalian Street of Gandhi Camp area of Batala city on Wednesday night. In this clash, two BJP candidates, Rajkumar (ward no 5) and Surjeet Kumar (ward no 6) were injured and police have booked SAD candidate from ward no 5, Balbir Singh alias Bittu along with four others.

While giving details, Batala BJP president, Suresh Bhatia said, “Large number of BJP workers were campaigning in ward no 5 in the favour of Rajkumar then suddenly alleged accused Balbir along with SAD supporters came in the ward for campaigning.” He said, “When SAD candidate along with his supporters came across BJP workers then they have started scolding them and later made brutal attack on BJP supporters.”

Bhatia said that SAD workers were equipped with weapons and they have especially targeted BJP candidate, Rajkumar who met with serious injuries in this incident. Akali workers managed to escape from the spot and we have informed police without any delay, said Bhatia. He said, “We have admitted the injured persons at civil hospital of Batala where they were under treatment.” “The local BJP unit demand immediate arrest of alleged accused persons and strict action against them.”

Station House Officer, Sub Inspector, Sukhwinder Singh said, “We have registered a case against Balbir Singh, his brother, his son and two other under different sections of Indian Penal Code (IPC).” He said that after knowing the incident, cops reached the spot immediately and controlled the situation. S I Singh said that accused persons were still absconding and search was on.
