Cong Muktsar MC nominee ends life

MUKTSAR: Rajan Painter, 54, who had filed his nomination as a Congress candidate from ward number 29 for the Muktsar municipal council elections and was later allegedly threatened to withdraw from the contest by the Akali candidate, committed suicide by jumping into a canal 15 km from here, on Friday night.
“He was a loyal Congress worker and had sought the party ticket. He filed his nomination and came to get the symbol on February 16 when the rival Shiromani Akali Dal candidate and his aides put a pistol to his head and threatened to eliminate his family if he did not withdraw his candidature,” said Karan Brar, the Congress MLA from Muktsar. She was among the first to meet the family of the deceased.
Brar claimed that Rajan’s wife Asha Rani had, in her complaint, blamed the SAD candidate and his accomplices of driving Rajan to end his life. Police said no suicide note had been recovered so far. A case was yet to be registered.
