MOGA: Hundreds of workers of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (SC wing) staged a protest outside the district administrative complex here on Wednesday to protest against the erratic supply of water to the Dalit colony on the Zira road here.

They alleged that the water supply was disrupted as water pipelines were dug out at the behest of certain local Akali leaders.

The Congress workers alleged that the people of the Dalit basti have been living without pure drinking water for the last one week but the officials of the public health department are not bothering about their problem.

Led by the PPCC (SC) wing’s president Dr Raj Kumar Chabbewal, residents of the basti, including a huge number of women, raised slogans against the state government.

The protesters alleged that the poor people were not getting water supply as promised by the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal-Bharatiya Janta Party (SADBJP) government at the time of elections. The protesters also burnt an effigy of the government. Addressing the gathering, Chabbewal said that Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal has completely failed to provide basic facilities to the poor and small farmers.

“The poor people have been seeking basic facilities like drinking water, employment and health services across the state for a long time, but the CM is not paying attention to the sufferings of the people. Actually, the state government is playing is in the hand of capitalists and is helpless. The Congress will start an agitation against the anti-people policies of the government soon,” said Chabbewal.

Dr Harjot Kamal, state general secretary, Sukhwinder Singh Danny, state secretary of the Punjab Youth Congress Dr Tara Singh Sandhu, former president of district Congress committee and Dr Malti Thapar, former president of the Punjab Mahila Congress also spoke on the occasion.
