Assaulted by Akali councillor, victim dies

Tarn Taran : A 60-year-old person who was allegedly beaten up by an Akali councillor succumbed to injuries on Friday. The deceased’s family members staged a protest Dharna at Bohri chowk in protest against inaction of police and attempted to commit suicide by pouring kerosene oil in the presence of police.
According to information, deceased Mohinder Singh, had sent his son, Goldy to the bazaar for purchasing ghee (oil) but on the way he was stopped by a neighbour youth and asked him to tie his turban. The victim’s son handed over the money to his companion that was given by the deceased but his companion fled away with the amount. Later, when Mohinder Singh filed a complaint to the police, due to the interference of the Akali councillor Tilak Raj, the cops did not pay an attention towards the matter.
Mohinder’s son said that his father approached the Akali councillor but the councillor threatened them to implicate them in a false case and forced to settle the case with the accused. He added that when his father again approached Tilak Raj, he brutally beat up his father. He said that he was admitted to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
After the protest, police registered a case against the Akali councillor under Section 295-A but the deceased’s family said that a murder case should be registered against the Akali councillor. The deceased’s family blocked traffic for more than six hours and tried to commit by pouring kerosene oil in the presence of police force.
The deceased’s family blamed that the police were acting as a puppet in the hands of Akali leader and did not taking action against the accused under political pressure. They warned the police administration if they did not register a case against the accused they will commit suicide and the councillor and police would be responsible for it.
Tarn Taran DSP Sukhwinder Singh said that he had registered a case against the accused under Section 295-A of the IPC. He added he was waiting the post mortem report and further action would be taken after receiving the post mortem report. He said that according to doctors report he was died due to heart attack.
