TARN TARAN: The Congress activists, led by former Tarn Taran district president Dharamvir Agnihotri, on Tuesday staged a protest against the police demanding the withdrawal of a criminal case registered against a party worker of Dubilian village under the Chabal police station.

The protest was held outside the office of the Tarn Taran SSP here. Carrying placards and shouting slogans against the police and the government, the Congress activists demanded an end to the political vendetta let loose by the Shiromani Akali Dal.

Agnihotri said, “What was most painful was not the registration of a false case against Maghar Singh, a party worker, but the manner in which the cops tried to stall the marriage of his daughter. .

Claiming that the criminal case was registered against Maghar Singh at the behest of an Akali leader of Dubilian and it was totally fabricated, Agnihotri said that the police did not verify the facts and blindly booked him under section 452 ( trespassing) and 306 of the IPC. He claimed that Maghar Singh himself was present in the Chabal police station when the case against him was registered on the complaint of a rival Akali leader of the village.

Agnihotri further claimed that last Sunday, Maghar Singh’s daughter’s wedding had been fixed. Despite telling the police officers that he would bring the alleged accused to the office of the SSP after the marriage, the police raided Maghar’s house, he added.

“What pained us that despite our assurance, the police conducted the raid to arrest Maghar, who is still absconding. As a result the marriage took place at an undisclosed gurdwara and without any of the usual wedding customs”, he added.

Police officials, however, justified the registration of the case but said that they were not aware of the wedding of the accused’s daughter.
