MUKTSAR: A large number of Congress workers from Muktsar, led by Gidderbaha MLA Amrinder Singh Raja Warring staged a day-long protest on Monday in front of the police station at Kot Bhai, under Gidderbaha constituency, alleging that the police have been booking Congress workers allegedly under political pressure under the SC/ST Act besides other sections of the IPC. About 14 people have been booked from Madhir village, 8 kms from Gidderbaha during the past three years in four cases, allegedly misusing the Act.

“The police have registered many false cases against our workers and office-bearers to suppress them out of political vendetta. About 14 people from Madhir village have been booked so far in three years at the behest of the Akalis. One of the accused has been booked in three separate cases. If the police did not stop registration of false cases against our workers, we shall be forced to stage a regular dharna in front of the police station, Kotbhai,” said Raja Warring, who is also national president of the Youth Congress. Except one, the cases under three FIRs are in courts.

“The last FIR was registered against five persons, Guravtar Singh, Darshan Singh, Pala Singh, Gurpreet Singh and Malkeet Singh on August 27 under sections 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt), 506 (Punishment for criminal intimidation), 148 (ting, armed with deadly weapon), 149 (Every member of unlawful assembly guilty of offence committed in prosecution of common object) besides the SC and ST Act at police station, Kotbhai. This is the third FIR against my cousin Guravtar, who was also booked in cases in March 2012 and June 2013. The cases are registered at the behest of the Akali leaders as we are Congress workers,” alleged Gurjeet Singh, general secretary of the Youth Congress from Muktsar.

“How can it be said that every time Guravtar Singh has a problem with the scheduled castes to be booked under the SC/ST Act. We demand fair inquiry. Actually, the Akalis are pressuring the Congress workers and office-bears to join their party and, if they don’t agree, they get them implicated in false cases by misusing the SC/ST Act. We shall not tolerate it any longer,” said Raja Warring.

The protest was still on till the filing of this report.

SSP SPEAK
Kuldeep Singh Chahal, senior superintendent of police, Muktsar, said that all the cases were registered after proper inquiry and are based on facts and medical reports where required. “The cases have been registered based on factual reports after proper verification of facts. There is no question of their being false and politically motivated. The allegations levelled by the protesters are baseless,” Chahal said.
