Bathinda : Three days after Akalis made tall claims about maintaining peace and harmony during their Sadbhavna rally, a SAD worker fired gunshots and injured the district rural president of ally BJP. Victim Gurwinder Bhagta is undergoing treatment at Max Hospital and his condition is now said to be out of danger.
As per Pammi Arora, an aide of Gurwinder, the incident occurred on Thursday around 7.45 pm at Bhagta Bhaika village. “We had come from a marriage in the nearby Bhairupa village and after dropping me, Gurwinder went to the house of Badal Singh, who was with the Akali Dal a year ago,” he said.
Badal Singh’s brother Darbara Singh is still in the ruling Akali Dal. He said the brothers had been fighting over a house and small landholdings for many days and the BJP president tried to intervene by asking them to mend their ways.
“This upset Darbara, who under the influence of liquor, pumped a bullet into Gurwinder Bhagta’s stomach,” said SHO at Bhagta Police Station, Inspector Birbal Singh. He said a case under Sections 307 and 25, 54, 59 of the Arms Act had been registered against the accused, who was at large. The SHO said the complainant also accused Darbara of breaking windowpanes of their car last evening.
Supporters of Bhagta gathered in the hospital and alleged that the police were not arresting the accused. “Arresting the accused is not a big deal for the police but senior Akali Dal leaders are trying to pressurise the police to not take action,” Pammi Arora alleged.
