Channi visits bereaved families in Abohar and Channu
Bathinda : Congress Legislature Party leader Charanjit Singh Channi on Wednesday served four-day ultimatum on the SAD-led government to arrest and register a criminal case against liquor baron Shiv Lal Doda and his nephew Amit Doda at whose farm house Bhim Tank, a Dalit was brutally murdered by chopping his limbs while his associate was battling with the life in Amritsar hospital.
He said in case of the failure of the government to act within the given time limit, all the safai karamchaaris of Punjab would stop their work in the state, adding: “This will be statewide strike and no safai karamchaari in the state will perform his duty.”
Channi also appealed to all the like-minded political parties of the state to come on a common platform to address this issue of a Dalit Family.
Channi accompanied by the senior Congress leader and Abohar MLA Sunil Jakhar visited the family of Bhim Tank earlier in the day and assured all legal help. Such help would be provided to every Dalit family that is victim of such atrocities committed by the Akali leaders, he mentioned.
“I myself born in a poor family and fully understand your pain. I will fight till the last to get you justice,” he told the family.
Channi announced that a three-member committee of MLAs would be constituted in consultation with state party chief Capt Amarinder Singh to probe and help the cases of atrocities against Dalits in the state.
He termed the SIT constituted by the state government to probe the heinous crime of chopping of limbs of Bhim Tank and his associate as an eyewash saying going by the earlier experience, such probes had only been ordered to save the culprits.
It’s pertinent to mention that the SIT is comprised of Ferozepur range DIG Amar Singh Chahal, Bathinda SP (H) Nanak SIngh and Abohar SP Harjeet Singh its members.
Channi accused the Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal of protecting the accused, alleging them to be the part of Akali Dal. He warned that Akali Dal-BJP rulers would have to pay dearly for working such atrocities against the weaker sections.
He assured them that the Congress would fight at every level against the Akali Dal-BJP combine to protect the interests of the Dalits in particular and the weaker sections in general. He said the brutal murder of Bhim Sain was an example of the brutal face of the Badal government that is anti-poor and anti-dalit.
However, BJP is on this issue also lodging severe protest as the accused Shiv Lal Doda had contested against BJP candidate as an independent from Abohar VIdhan Sabha seat in 2012 polls.
It is pertinent to mention here that police have till date arrested four among 12 persons booked in the case. The police are claiming it to be case of gang rivalry not of any caste based or politically driven crime.
CLP leader also visited Channu and expressed deep condolences with the bereaved family of 12-year-old Arshdeep Kaur, who was crushed to death after New Deep bus drove over her at Channu village on Friday.
