Akali men accused of beating up SAD (A) leaders

CHAMKAUR SAHIB: Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) leaders were allegedly beaten up in the conference of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) held at the diwan hall of gurdwara Katalgarh Sahib here on Tuesday.
Some SAD (A) leaders, including district president Ranjit Singh Santokhgarh, to enter the venue of the SAD conference and sat close to Prem Singh Chandumajra. Santokhgarh sought permission to speak from the stage, which was denied. This lead to an altercation between the SAD and SAD (A) leaders.
When Chandumajra objected to the presence of SAD (A) leaders, the SAD workers allegedly pounced on Santokhgarh and other leaders and thrashed them. The turbans of SAD (A) leaders came off. The police intervened and took them out of the diwan hall. The police arrested nine SAD (A) workers, including Santokhgarh, under Sections 107 (apprehension of breach of peace and tranquillity) and 151 (arrest to prevent the commission of cognisable offences) of the CrPC. Santokhgarh alleged SAD leaders were using religious stages for the political conference.
AAP state convener Sucha Singh Chhotepur and Sangrur MP Bhagwant Mann condemned the incident saying that the SAD leaders had no respect for Guru Granth Sahib.
Chandumajra said the SAD (A) leaders were told to leave the diwan hall as were trying to disrupt their conference.
