LUDHIANA: The Supreme Court’s stay on Centre’s notification lifting ban on controversial bull taming sport Jallikattu in Tamil Nadu and bullock cart races has come as a dampener for participants at the 80th Kila Raipur Games here.

Buoyed over Centre’s January 7 nod to bullock cart races, the participants had started fullscale preparations for the event which is the main attraction of the games — popularly known as Rural Olympics.

A large numbers of participants have already bought new pairs of bulls for the February 4-7 event.

“The Supreme Court has taken a very harsh decision. The bullock cart races draw huge crowd. We have spent lakhs of rupees on these bulls. We request the authorities and judiciary to take a wise decision,” says Vicky of Gujjarwal village.

Balwinder Singh Jagga, secretary of Grewal Sports Club said, “After a go-ahead was given to races, Kila Raipur village members had organised an ‘akhand paath’. These races bring smile on faces of farmers. These shouldn’t be banned.”
