Akali councillor Karwal, 11 others held for fee protest

Ludhiana : Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) councillor Kamaljit Singh Karwal and 11 others were arrested by police in the Shimlapuri area on Thursday when they were protesting against the private schools over fee hike issue. The police have arrested them for apprehension of breach of peace and tranquillity of an area under Sections 107/151 of CrPC
The parents association was protesting against the management of Harkrishan Public School, Shimlapuri from last one month and on Thursday the parents have locked the school premises in protest. The SAD councillor Kamaljit Karwal supported the parents association and joined the protest. Following the arrest the protestors were produced in court where Karwal refused to file bail application. Manpreet Singh, Ram Kapoor and Parminder Singh were among those others arrested. Karwal said that he would continue the struggle for the parents who were demanding to decrease fee, development charges and re-admission fee.
SHO Shimlapuri said that the 12 persons were arrested for preventative measures under Sections 107/ 151 of CrPC. The decision on bail would be taken late in the evening. The arrested persons had locked the school premises illegally and allegedly created ruckus outside the school.
Meanwhile, the parents said that other schools have decreased the rates following the orders of deputy commissioner but management of Harkrishan School have denied following the orders and allegedly extorting money in the name of fee.
Bains brothers face ire of protesters
During the protest the Independent MLA Bains brothers remained on the hit list of protestors. The protestors said that MLA Simarjeet Singh Bains have ignored the area residents and their problems.
One of the protestors said that Bains is gaining publicity by protesting against private company but did not turn in their support despite several requests. Few days ago, parents association had raised slogans against Bains brothers.
