Chandigarh : The Assembly elections in the state are likely to be held in the end of January or early February next year. Though the dates will be announced by the Election Commission later, the state administration has been asked to gear up for the elections by January.
A five-member delegation of the Election Commission visited the state yesterday to assess election preparedness. It asked the government to be cautious about drug abuse during elections, besides keeping tabs on currency flow.
The delegation held a meeting with the deputy commissioners, police commissioners and senior superintendents of police from all over the state. Chief Electoral Officer VK Singh reportedly told the delegation that the revised electoral rolls would be ready by January 2, 2017.
After the publication of the revised electoral rolls, the process of filing nominations, withdrawals and scrutiny will begin. It will take nine days, sources say. After that, 14 days will be allowed for campaigning. As a result, the polling date could be either in the last week of January or early February. It is likely that the polling in Punjab will coincide with polling in Uttar Pradesh.
