BATALA: In yet another incident of attack on policemen, a head constable of the counter-intelligence wing of the police Harpal Singh was brutally beaten up on Monday by a former Akali sarpanch of Natwal village and his accomplices. The victim has been admitted to the civil hospital here with both legs broken and grievous head injuries.
The incident occurred around 9 am and the victim was admitted to the hospital by 9.30 am, but till 12 afternoon, none of the policemen of the Batala police district reached the hospital to record the statement of the injured constable. Around 12.30 pm, AIG, counter- intelligence RS Uppal reached the hospital and asked the senior officials of the Batala police to take immediate action in this regard.
Harpal Singh and his associate Kuldeep Singh, were going towards Gurdaspur on their motorcycle when they were allegedly attacked by iron rods on the outskirts of Nathwal village by sarpanch Vikramjit Singh and his companions.
“About one dozen people got down from four vehicles and asked me to stop my motorcycle. When I refused to do so, two of the accused stood in front of my bike and challenged me to escape. The other ten then pounced on me and mercilessly started beating us. This went on for nearly 10 minutes after which they left the place considering I was dead,” said Harpal Singh talking to HT at the hospital.
He said that three months ago, on a tip-off, the CIA police of Batala had arrested Vikramjit’s friend, Amana from his residence at Mula Suniya following which a huge cache of arms and ammunition was recovered from him. “After that incident, I got many threatening calls from Vikramjit and his companions. Today’s assault on me and my friend is the punishment of my sincerity towards my department,” he added.
It is pertinent to mention here that even after passing of more than nine hours, the Batala police are yet to decide under which police station the crime spot falls as SHO, Ranger Nangal police station, Rajesh Kakkar, said that the crime spot falls under the jurisdiction of Sadar police station, while SHO, Sadar police station, Kamalpreet Singh, told that the area falls under the Sadar police station.
