Media persons cane-charged during march towards Majithia’s residence

Amritsar : Members of Chandigarh-Punjab Journalists Association (CPJA) were cane-charged by the Punjab Police when they organised a protest march towards the house of state Revenue Minister Bikram Singh Majithia here on Wednesday.
The CPJA president Jasbir Singh Patti, condemning the lathi-charge, said that it was unwarranted since they were going to handover the memorandum listing the demands of working journalists.
Patti said that the CPJA has asked the government for Rs 10 lakh accidental insurance cover, to ensure security for field journalists, fulfill promises made to the journalists in the previous elections manifesto and pension Rs 10,000 per month to all the journalists who have completed the age of 58.
However, Majithia in a statement, has assured the CPJA that Punjab government would consider all of their reasonable demands sympathetically. Meanwhile, Prof Sarchand Singh Media Advisor to Majithia on Wednesday received the memorandum from Chandigarh-Punjab Journalists Association regarding their demands.
Majithia said that the Punjab government is providing various facilities to the working journalists in the state including free bus facility, accidental insurance of Rs 5 lakh to accredited and even to yellow card holders, establishing press clubs in districts, smart cards, stay for accredited journalists in circuit houses on concessional rates. Prof Sarchand Singh said that Majithia has apprised him that the Punjab government would consider genuine demands of the Chandigarh-Punjab Journalists Association.
AAP condemns cane-charge on mediapersons
Chandigarh: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) condemned the police lathi-charge on the members of Chandigarh-Punjab Journalists Association (CPJA) when they were heading to gherao the house of Cabinet minister Bikram Singh Majithia on Wednesday at Amritsar.
AAP Punjab convenor Gurpreet Singh Ghuggi termed the police action as an attack on the fourth pillar of democracy by the SAD-BJP government. Ghuggi said that the state government has no respect for the democratic setup of the country. He said that the law and order situation in the state has gone from bad to worst in the present regime.
Ghuggi demanded strict action against the police officers responsible for the brutal attack on the journalists.
