Gurdaspur : Former Gurdaspur MLA and Akali leader GS Babbehali’s son Amarjot Singh and his four accomplices were booked for allegedly beating up three youths and damaging their car at the busy Hanuman Chowk here this morning.
The victims belong to Pahra, the native village of sitting Congress MLA Barindermeet Singh Pahra. The youths reportedly entered into an altercation with Maninder Pal Singh Sabi, a brother of Babbehali’s PA Kamaljit Singh.
The accused hit the youths with baseball bats. The victims were admitted to the Gurdaspur Civil Hospital.
Bhupinderjeet Singh Virk, SSP, said Amarjot Singh and four others were booked under various Sections of the IPC, including 324 (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons), 427 (committing mischief and causing loss to property), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 148 (rioting armed with deadly weapons). The case has been registered at the Gurdaspur city police station.
The SSP said he would not allow anyone to interfere in the working of the police. MLA Pahra said he had told senior police officers not to act under any pressure. “I have spoken to all senior officers monitoring the case. It is sad for the former MLA, who lost the recent election to me, to be acting out of vengeance,” he said.
The police were yet to make any arrest.
