Chandigarh : Over six months after holding World Kabaddi Cub 2016, the Punjab government has failed to clear hotel bills more than Rs 80 lakh. The tournament, a dream event of former Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal, in which Kabaddi players from across the world participated- was organised in Bathinda.

Extending the best possible facilities and hospitality for the players of national and international fame, the state government had booked Bathinda-based eight hotels. The sports department of the government was to bear the expenses for the boarding and lodging of the players. Interestingly, the government has not paid the bills raised by the hoteliers till date.

Satish Arora, President of Punjab Hotel Association, claimed that the hoteliers who offered services (boarding and lodging of players) to the sports department are facing a great hardship in getting their dues clear for the past couple of months. He alleged that their repeated visits to the officials of the sports department and the Deputy Commissioner Bathinda have failed to yield any result.

The Akali government had organised World Kabaddi Cup, six times in Bathinda and the hoteliers had to face the same problem every year, alleged Arora.

He lamented this time the hoteliers were hit

two-fold. “First, the bills were not cleared by the government and then it was demonetisation drive of Modi government that virtually broke the backbone of the industry,” he claimed.

The association has warned the department to face the consequences if their payments were not cleared soon.
