Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee President Capt Amarinder Singh today challenged Chief Minister Mr Parkash Singh Badal to an open debate to settle once for all as who was the real enemy of Punjab, the Congress, as Mr Badal had often been alleging, or the Akalis who really are and have always been.

He said, Akalis by demanding the “Punjabi Suba” and forcing its formation had done great disservice to the state for their petty partisan and parochial aim of forming the government which, however, they could never do of their own even till today.

Reacting to Mr Badal’s allegations at Longowal on Saturday where he accused the Congress of being the enemy of Punjab, the PCC President asked Mr Badal, “you choose your place and time to debate and let the people of Punjab judge for themselves as who is speaking the truth”.

Asserting that the Akalis were the only enemies of Punjab, Capt Amarinder pointed out, it was they who fragmented Punjab into small parts and pieces with the sole motive to form a government in Punjab. “Even after breaking Punjab into pieces they (the Akalis) have not been able to form the government of their own and they have always needed the crutches of other parties for their support”, he pointed out.

The former Chief Minister said, it is for the first time that a political party that claims to be the guardian of Punjab and Punjabiyat, for its narrow partisan interests broke it into three states, Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh. In the process, he added, they surrendered more than two third of land and resources to these two states.

“We lost precious forest wealth, the huge hydro-electric potential, industrial cities and also the proximity to national capital”, he pointed out, while asking, who else can do it to a state than a sworn enemy and the Akalis proved it themselves. He said, the Akalis never knew what they really wanted. “Otherwise why should they ask to get back in 1973 through Anandpur Sahib Resolution what they had willingly surrendered in 1966”, he asked, while referring to Akalis demand for return of Punjabi speaking areas from Haryana which they had willingly agreed to in 1966 at the time of the division of Punjab.

Advising Mr Badal to go for introspection and look beyond sectarian and divisive politics and stop stoking communal passions and exploiting people’s sentiments, Capt Amarinder asked him, “have pity on what is left over now of Punjab and not divide people any further”. He said, Punjab today needs a progressive outlook and vision that can save it from disaster the Akalis are fast pushing it into.
