NAWANSHAHR: The local Shiromani Akali Dal MLA and Akali stalwart, Jatinder Singh Kariha died of a severe cardiac arrest at around 1.30 am last nightg. He is survived by his wife, four daughters, besides a daughter–in-law and two grand children.

His only son Major Hira Singh Sandhu had died in January this year. Born on March 2, 1948, Jathedar Kariha was initiated into politics after the death of his father Hardev Singh Kariha who had died in a road accident.In March 1977, the young Kariha was fielded from Nawanshahr assembly segment by the SAD and he became an MLA by defeating the then Congress stalwart, Dilbagh Singh. Later, he was elected to the state assembly in 2000 bye-election from Nawanshahr and then in 2007. Apart from the death of his only son, Kariha had suffered another shock of his life when his young nephew (sister’s son) had died nearly two months ago. On learning about his demise this morning, a fairly large number of people including representatives and leaders of various political, social, educational, religious and trade organisations visited his residence at village Kariha to mourn his death. Prominent among those who visited his residence today included senior Akali leaders Dr Daljeet Singh Cheema, Kuldip Singh Wadala, Jarnail Singh Wahid, Amarjit Singh Shahi, Sukhdev Singh Bhaur, MLA Mohan Singh Banga and MLA Ch. Nand Lal. All the private educational institutions in the town were immediately closed as a mark of respect to the departed leader.

As per family sources, Jathedar Kariha would be cremated at 11 a.m. on Friday at village Kariha. The Chief Minister, Parkash Singh Badal accompanied by his cabinet colleagues and leaders of various political parties would attend his last rites. Meanwhile, faculty and students of KC Group of Institutes here condoled the death of Kariha while remembering his contribution to the development of the area.

Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and SAD President and Deputy CM Sukhbir Singh Badal haves expressed profound grief and sorrow over the sad demise of Kariha.

In a condolence message the Chief Minister described Kariha's demise as a colossal loss to the party as it has been devoid of an honest and dedicated leader who was committed to the party's philosophy to ensure overall development and prosperity in the state. The Chief Minister said: " Kariha being a grass root leader was fully seized of the problems of the disadvantaged sections of the society and his outstanding services for the welfare of lower strata would be ever remembered by one and all".
