Asserting that the people of Punjab had made up their mind to change the regime in the forthcoming assembly elections, Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee President Capt Amarinder Singh today said, Congress was set to return to power in the state. He said, his party respected Anna Hazare and he was sure once he learns about the colossal levels of corruption indulged into by the Akali-BJP alliance in Punjab he will find it difficult to support them.
Speaking to reporters along the sidelines of the interaction organised by the Punjab unit of the National Students Union of India here today, Capt Amarinder asserted that the SGPC election results were no real indicator of the mood of the people as the electorate was far too less. Even in the SGPC elections the Akalis despite using brute force were opposed by about 40 per cent voters.
To a question about reports of Anna Hazare planning to campaign in Punjab against Congress, the PCC President said, while he and his party respected the Gandhian for the crusade against corruption, it becomes very difficult to understand and accept that he will support an alliance which has crossed all the limits of corruption and broken all records. “After all it is the question of his own credibility as he cannot claim to be crusading against corruption and at the same time supporting the corrupt
like Akalis and the BJP”, he remarked.
Capt Amarinder said, people in Punjab were totally disillusioned with the government as corruption was prevailing in every section and sphere of the government. “Whether you go to a police station or a patwar-khana you have to grease every palm that comes across”, he pointed out.
The PCC President said, the Congress was perfectly in the battle gear and the morale of the party rank and file was quite high. He said, while Congress was coming out with a positive agenda, at the same time it has been exposing the government on corruption, misgovernance, lawlessness, political victimisation and economic failure.
