Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee president Capt Amarinder Singh today said Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and Deputy CM Sukhbir Badal, who is heading the Home Department, have completely subverted and undermined the institution of the Lokpal by transferring the Inspector-General of Police, Sham Lal Gakhar, who as the IG Lokpal was heading two inquiries against them.

In a statement issued here today, Capt Amarinder Singh said it only vindicated the Congress’ stand that the Badals had weakened the institution of the Lokpal. “We have been continuously maintaining that they have weakened the Lokpal and rendered it toothless and now our stand is vindicated”, he remarked.

Amarinder further said the Badals were getting the records in the Transport Department changed and the District Transport Officers were being pressurised to make the changes. “In order to bide time for changing the records they transferred the IG so that they can present a clean case before the new inquiry officer”, he pointed out.

Rajinder Kaur Bhattal, Leader of the Opposition in the Punjab Vidhan Sabha, has also criticised the transfer of Gakhar. She said this was an attempt to hamper the probe initiated by the IG, who had been asked to submit his report to State Lokpal Justice DS Dhaliwal (retd) on November 1.
