CHANDIGARH: Two days after newly appointed state health minister Balbir Singh Sidhu’s statement about increasing the retirement age of government doctors, Punjab Civil Medical Services Association (PCMSA) on Wednesday opposed the proposal.
To convey their resentment, a delegation of doctors led by PCMSA president Dr Gagandeep Singh and general secretary Dr Manohar Singh met the health minister to express their concerns about increasing the age of doctors from 58 to 65.
The association discussed the implications of increasing the retirement age as promotional avenues are already very less and a medical officer has to wait for 25 years for his first promotion as SMO and those who are eligible for promotion as SMO or deputy director have to wait another 7 years.
Increasing retirement age will lead to stagnation at the higher level, the association said.
