CHANDIGARH : With his deft and firm handling of the hypersensitive situation that emerged in the aftermath of the killing of a dera premi and one of the main accused in the Bargadi sacrilege, the Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh has managed to diffuse a serious crisis that had emerged virtually from nowhere.

By constituting a high level Special Investigation Team headed by Additional Director General of Police, Law and Order, Ishwar Singh, a thorough professional with unmatched and unparalleled integrity, to probe into the murder inside the high security Nabha Jail on Saturday evening, the Chief Minister has managed to restore the confidence of the dera premis who were otherwise in a confrontationist mode alleging that they were being falsely implicated and victimised.

While constituting the high level SIT, the Chief Minister was also categorical that the government was not in a position to withdraw the sacrilege case against several accused including Bittu. He made it clear that the law will take its own course and let the courts decide as to who was the actual culprit.

The killing of the dera premi had come at a time when everything seemed to have been going on right in the state. The Chief Minister was scheduled to fly to the national capital on Sunday as he had a long list of meetings scheduled this week, with the Prime Minister and some other union ministers.

The Chief Minister cancelled all his meetings in Delhi and summoned the senior officials of the state government including the Director General of Police Dinkar Gupta and the Chief Secretary Karan Avatar Singh and held detailed discussions before reaching the conclusion to constitute the SIT headed by Ishwar Singh.

The killing of the dera premi had created a difficult situation for the Chief Minister. On the one hand his government has been vigorously pursuing the sacrilege case having constituted an SIT for the purpose earlier, on the other hand, he was faced with another equally difficult situation to ensure that the dera premis anger over the killing of Bittu does not spread and spillover and create a serious law and order situation in the state.

Given the intense sensitivities and emotions involved in the matter, the Chief Minister has to tread a cautious path to ensure that the justice is not only done, but was also seen to have been done. While under no circumstances the investigations into the sacrilege and the subsequent police firing can be allowed to be derailed or saturated, at he same time the government has to ensure that it was following the natural course of justice and not letting anyone feel victimized.

Capt Amarinder has successfully managed to ensure peace by his clear and categorical message that while his government is vigorously pursuing the case of sacrilege and is serious to punish the culprits responsible for it, at the same time he has also conveyed a firm and stern message that no innocent will be allowed to be victimized at any cost.
