Chandigarh : Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh on Tuesday ordered the Finance Department to immediately release Rs118.42 crore to clear pending scholarship funds for SC students studying in 634 colleges across the state.

The backlog pertains to 2015-16 and 2016-17 fiscal years, said a government spokesperson. The CM announced his decision following his meeting with Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Sadhu Singh Dharamsot and Jalandhar West MLA Sushil Rinku.

Of the Rs118.42 crore, Rs67.42 crore would be released for SC students studying in 312 colleges, including degree colleges, technical and medical education institutes, the spokesperson said.

The remaining Rs51 crore would go to students of 322 colleges in the same streams as well as students of the School Council of Education Research and Training (SCERT) institutes.

Reiterating the state’s commitment to ensure the welfare of SC students, the CM also directed the department to release funds regularly for the scholarship so as to enable them complete their education without any hassle.
