NEW DELHI/ CHANDIGARH: When Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi lamented about the scourge of drugs in Punjab last year, saying nearly seven out of 10 youth in the state suffered from an addiction problem, his statement was roundly panned by several state politicians. Punjab's Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal lampooned him for being out of touch.

Amritsar : The state's Special Operations Cell, a counter-intelligence wing of the Punjab Police, arrested an assistant security officer at Guru Ram Dass International Airport, Amritsar, and two others after it found 14 kg of heroin, worth Rs 70 crore in the international market, in their possession.

6 passengers die in bus accident near Moga

Moga : Six bus passengers, two of them women, were killed and 30 injured when a private bus collided with a truck near Mehna village on the Moga-Ludhiana highway, 15 km from Moga, today. The accident took place at about 10 am when the over-speeding bus collided head-on with the truck. A Tata Ace also rammed into the truck. Its driver died on the spot. The injured passengers were rushed to the Moga district hospital for first-aid.

Farmer suicides: Pre-2000 cases unjustly ignored

Though the Punjab government, citing lack of funds, has temporarily stopped payments for the rehabilitation of family members of farmers who committed suicide because of economic distress, the move to compensate only post-2000 cases has left many families in the lurch.
