CBI to probe Punjab land deal involving influential families

Chandigarh, August 8: The Punjab and Haryana High Court today ordered a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation into a land acquisition deal that allegedly benefited three influential families in cornering Rs 5.63 crore. One of the families is alleged to have close association with Bikram Singh Majithia, Punjab Revenue Minister and brother-in-law of Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal.

KAPURTHALA: Bholath MLA and former minister Bibi Jagir Kaur was released on four weeks’ parole by the district magistrate here on Wednesday. She was lodged in the Kapurthala Modern Jail serving a five-year sentence after being convicted on the charges of forcibly aborting the child of her daughter Harpreet Kaur. Harpreet had died soon after.

The Punjab government has begun action against 21 IAS officers for failing to disclose their assets despite repeated reminders and warnings. The government has sought explanation from the defaulting bureaucrats on failure to submit their Immovable Property Returns (IPRs) for 2011 and 2010 till July 31, which was the extended deadline.
