The police department had started a video-conferencing facility in the state three weeks ago to help non-resident Indians lodge complaints but it has failed to evoke any response. Some NRIs rued that the time fixed by the department - 4 pm to 5 pm on Mondays - suited Punjab police, but not them. Besides, an hour a week was not sufficient, they said.

Gurbir Singh, an NRI from Vancouver, Canada and native of Ludhiana, said, "No doubt, it is a good step, but its timing should be made feasible to evoke a good response. If the government actually wants to help NRIs, it should start a 24X7 toll-free number for NRI complaints.''

Surjeet Singh Grewal, who hails from Ludhiana and is settled in Toronto, said, "Many Punjabis live in Canada. The video-conferencing time does not suit them, as it is early morning there. The government should increase the number of days and hours of the facility.'' Inspector general of police, NRI affairs, Gurpreet Kaur Deo said, "The project is an experiment started for the convenience of NRIs and it is yet to be publicized. I will handle these video-conferences.''
