Assamese NRIs in US mourn death of Bhupen Hazarika

The Assamese community based in the US has expressed a sense of shock and sadness at the demise of the legendary figure Bhupen Hazarika.

Three Assamese associations, Assam Association of North America (Aana), Assam Foundation of North America, and Assam Sahitya Sabha North America (Aasna) have expressed their sorrow with a heavy heart.

"It is sad to learn about the death of Bhupenda. This is a big loss for Assam and the world, which lost a great soul and a human being," said Manjita Saikia, a Texas representative of Assam Association of North America.

"Bhupenda has always been an inspiration for us in every respect," added Saikia.

A considerable number of Assamese people, based in the US, are planning to give a befitting tribute to the departed soul, who had a great influence over the community for many years.

"Right now we are planning a condolence meet and are in touch with other associations for a tribute. The decision will be taken in a short while and we are just waiting for most of the Assamese people to assemble at a common place for a decision. Next year, when all the Assamese people will meet for the annual convention at Calgary, Canada during the July 4 weekend, a befitting tribute will be paid to the maestro of Assam," said Dev Borah, public relations, Assam Association of North America.

The association has also stated that Bhupen Hazarika had performed at several conventions in North America, much to the admiration of his fans there. A press release also stated that a condolence message was sent to all family members.
