Leading NRI entrepreneur Dr Rami Ranger has donated 25,000 pounds for the development and expansion of the Indian Gymkhana Club here.

Vice-President of the Club Lord Gulam Noon made this announcement at a reception hosted by the Indian High Commission to jointly celebrate Diwali, Eid and Guru Nanak Jayanti.

Lord Noon also said the Club was currently providing Yoga and body conditioning classes for women and 320 women had enrolled for it. He said the Club is getting 100 per cent grant for the purpose from the local Council.

Meanwhile, the High Commission's decision to celebrate Diwali, Eid & Guru Nanak Jayanti jointly came in for praise from several speakers.

"It is becoming a traditional event. Celebrations of these festivals reflect on India - a country which is a mosaic of multi-language, multi-culture and multi-traditions," Acting High Commissioner Rajesh Prasad said.

"We believe in mutual tolerance, brotherhood and peaceful co-existence. It is an exciting time to be an India," he said.

Baroness Sandip Varma said holding Diwali, Eid and Guru Nanak Jayanti celebrations together reflected on the rich traditions of India which she described as a "multi-cultural and pluralistic country."

Labour MP Virendra Sharma, Dr Rami Ranger, Justice Mota Singh, NRI Hotelier and Chairman of the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan Joginder Sangar, Councillor Jagdish Sharma and S S Sidhu, Minister (Co-ordination) in the India High Commission, also attended the reception.
