Mississauga's Harjit S. Dhaliwal, a longtime small business owner and community volunteer, was sworn in as a citizenship judge earlier this month.
Citizenship judges are responsible for making decisions about citizenship applications, presiding over citizenship ceremonies and administering the oath of citizenship to new citizens.
Dhaliwal, with more than 25 years of experience as a small business owner, has served in various capacities with the Mississauga Erin Mills Lions Club and sat on the board of the United Way of Peel Region for three years. In addition, he's served as chair of the Wishmaker Parade for Peel Region and was a founding member of the International Punjabi Chamber of Commerce.
Mississauga-Erindale MP Bob Dechert was in attendance when Dhaliwal was sworn in. He had high praise for the new judge.
"I believe Judge Dhaliwal to be an excellent example of the qualities of Canadian citizenship through his history of community service and integrity," said Dechert. "As such, he is well qualified to instill in others the value and true meaning of being a Canadian citizen."
