Indian-American professor Anjani Jain has been appointed the senior associate dean for the full-time MBA programme at Yale School of Management (SOM), the institute announced on Monday.

In his new role July 1 onwards, the India-born Jain, who grew up primarily in Madhya Pradesh and by his own admission, "first encountered the cosmopolitan breadth of India at IIM Ahmedabad", will focus on Yale's flagship full-time MBA programme, taking lead responsibility for admissions, career development, and student and academic services.

In response to an email query, Jain wrote: "My principal responsibility will be the academic administration of the full-time MBA programme at Yale SOM. I will also teach in the MBA programme."

The appointment comes at a time when Yale SOM is in expansion mode. The school recently introduced a Master of Advanced Management programme and participated in the launch of the Global Network for Advanced Management, a collective effort by 21 international business schools to understand the challenges posed by complex global markets. Also, with the planned move to Edward P Evans Hall, SOM's new campus, the school intends to significantly increase the number of students in its master's degree programmes.

According to Jain: "At Wharton, I had the chance to be involved in several global initiatives and I hope to contribute to Yale's substantial global initiatives, including the Global Network, but it is not primarily my responsibility. My preliminary impression is that Yale SOM is not as prominently visible outside the US as it should be. Given Yale's pre-eminence as a university, I see this as a great opportunity," wrote Jain.

"Anjani is highly motivated by Yale SOM's mission to educate leaders for business and society, and I am confident he will make important contributions as the school continues to grow in scope and influence," said dean Edward A Snyder in a statement. Jain holds a bachelor's degree in physics and mathematics from University of Indore (1977) and an MBA from IIM, Ahmedabad (1979). He left in 1981 to pursue a PhD in operations research (at UCLA) and has been on the faculty of Wharton School since 1986.

"I have had a role in the academic administration of the MBA programme since 1993. I served as Wharton's vice-dean of the graduate division for 10 years starting in 2000 and moved to an analogous position for the MBA programme for Executives in 2010," adds Jain.

Jain has taught courses at Hebrew University in Jerusalem, the Interdisciplinary Center in Herzliya, and the Indian School of Business in Hyderabad.

ISB dean Ajit Rangnekar told ET: "Anjani has been a terrific supporter of ISB, and has played a lion's role in the first curriculum of ISB 10 years ago. He has been closely involved with ISB ever since, and has guided and advised us on innumerable occasions on faculty, programme and administrative matters."
