The decision to launch NRI cards for Punjabis living abroad so as to identify them for official purposes and facilitate various services to them; has not gone well with a section of NRIs. While talking to DailyPost, a California based-NRI and the president of North American Punjabi Association (NAPA), Satnam Singh Chahal said, “the card was not a welcome move and it will not serve any purpose of solving the real problems of NRIs which they faced back home in Punjab.”

“The Punjab government should not try to divert the attention of NRIs from the real problems by making such decisions. This is being done to temporarily please the NRI community. Troubles for the NRIs are being created by some corrupt police officers and members of ruling party who are unnecessarily interfering in the land and property disputes of NRIs,” he added.

“There should be a strict order by the state government that if any Senior Superintendent of Police fails to resolve the dispute of any NRI, he or she should be suspended immediately and the case should be handed over to Inspector General of Punjab Police NRI affairs. Also, he or she should be directed to decide the case within a stipulated time to the satisfaction of both the parties,” he said while suggesting to the state government.
