JALANDHAR: An NRI who decided to stay in the country to facilitate his son’s studies was allegedly stripped and tortured at the Bhogpur police station in August last year. He claimed that intentions of land-grab were behind the illegal detention and torture.
Ranjit Singh, 50, a resident of Mujrewal village, narrated the alleged instance to Inspector General of Police (IGP), Jalandhar zone, who is also IGP (NRI affairs). He now lives in Greater Vancouver city in Canada where he is a certified general accountant.
“As my son had got an admission in medical college, the family decided to stay in India, till his studies were complete. I told Gursharan Singh, son of my sister-in-law, that I would look after my 25 acres,” he said. Gursharan apparently was unhappy to yield control of the land. “He along with two others connived with Bhogpur police station sub-inspector Harbans Singh to force me to go back to Canada,” he said.
